So, I have recently discovered this flavorful leafy green and now consider it my new lettuce of choice. Although I’m sure I had previously eaten it in numerous salads, I hadn’t recognized its distinct and unique flavor. It all started when I became curious as to how each of the lettuce flavors varied (weird, I know), and then I proceeded to do a lettuce “tasting” and compared the arugula to the other lettuces from the store-bought bag of “mixed salad greens”. Let me just say that it’s not your typical lettuce flavored….umm, lettuce! Maybe the flavor seems bitter and unappealing to some, but I find it a pleasant peppery and slightly spicy taste; I feel like I need only a lightly flavored salad dressing to compliment the flavor. AND, just a super fun fact, apparently it is also termed “Salad Rocket”. Yeah. ‘Nuff said. Oh, and it provides loads of vitamin C and potassium. Bonus.
As a new proud arugula fan, it will be a salad staple around here from now on. In fact, I plan on trying this Winter Salad with Ripe Pears and Toasted Pecans very soon!
